HISTORY OF GREEN MOUNTAIN ELECTRIC SUPPLY, INC.:

GMES Original Owners

Green Mountain Electric was founded in 1953 by Earl Laber, Raymond Place, and Norman Bean as a motor repair and rewinding shop in Newport, VT. In the mid 1960’s, Green Mountain Electric expand their business to also include selling electrical supplies to the area factories. Electrical sales grew steadily, and in 1970 Green Mountain Electric changed their name to Green Mountain Electric Supply, Inc. At the same time, Raymond Place and Norman Bean retired, leaving Earl Laber to run the new business.

GMES Original CrewIn 1977 Green Mountain Electric Supply, Inc. became a second-generation family-owned Vermont business when Earl Laber sold the company to his three sons; Gary, Scott and Gregg and a fourth partner Steven Carpenter. Business continued to grow and in 1986 Green Mountain Electric Supply, Inc. decided to stop rewinding and repairing motors and focus their efforts on electrical supplies. In 1988 Green Mountain Electric Supply built a 12,000 square foot warehouse to house the growing company. By 1996, the building was expanded to 23,000 square feet which included space for a showroom rental offices.

Using the Newport, VT location as their headquarters and major warehouse, Green Mountain Electric Supply, Inc. expanded in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York over the next 18 years:

  • 1998 – Leasing a building in St Johnsbury, VT to expanded service in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire

  • 2001 – Purchasing Choinere Electric in St. Albans, VT to expanded service to the western side of Vermont

  • 2007 – The St. Albans branch moved a mile down the road to a new LEED rated building and expanded to include a specialty lighting division with a focus in residential lighting that would service Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York customers through an interactive website and certified Lighting Associates on staff

  • 2004 – Purchasing Burgess Electrical Supply in Burlington, VT to expanded service in the Burlington market

  • 2008 – Purchasing Glens Falls Electric Supply in Queensbury, NY to expand service to the Adirondack area of New York

  • 2009 – Leasing a building in West Lebanon, NH to expanded service in central New Hampshire and Vermont

  • 2010 – Purchasing Valley Electric Supply in Middlebury, VT to further expand their service in central Vermont

  • 2011 – The Queensbury, NY branch moved down the road to a newly renovated warehouse location to accommodate the large volume of business being done in the New York market and serve as small distribution center for any further New York expansion

  • 2011 – The St. Johnsbury, VT branch moved down the road to a newly renovated warehouse location which would be easier for their contractors to access

  • 2011 – Starting a renewable energies division with a focus in photovoltaic solar sales, based out of the Burlington, VT location and servicing Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and Massachusetts

  • 2013 – Leasing a building in Derry, NH to expand services in southern New Hampshire and the northern Boston, MA market

  • 2013 – Purchasing two locations (Watervliet and Oneonta) from Allied Electric in New York to expand service to the Albany and Binghamton areas of New York

  • 2014 – Purchasing a building in Plattsburgh, NY to expand service in northeastern New York

In 2014, Green Mountain Electric Supply, Inc. built a state of the art distribution center and corporate headquarters in Colchester, VT to oversee the 11 branch locations throughout Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire. The Burlington, VT branch relocated to the new facility along with corporate staff, major truck routes, and major shipping/receiving operations.
